Our school crest

Our school crest remains almost exactly as it was back in 1919. It displays the traditional education symbols of the Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta.

  • The cross on our crest represents the Christian base of the school with Jesus at its centre.
  • The star incorporating ‘M’ within it symbolises the vital role of Mary.
  • The words, ‘Under Your Protection’, are taken from its Latin original, Sub Tuum Praesidium.
  • The letters 'SPCS' stand for St Patrick’s Catholic School.
  • The shamrocks on each side of the crest illustrate our school’s link to St Patrick and its Irish Catholic heritage.

Our history

Named for an Irish saint, St Patrick's Primary Blacktown was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1919. We recently celebrated over 100 years of providing quality Catholic education in western Sydney.

The story of St Patrick’s School begins in Callan, a town in Kilkenny, Ireland. In 1888, the Sisters of Mercy came from Ireland to Parramatta and would later set up schools across the Western Sydney region. One of the schools was St Patrick’s Blacktown, founded in 1919.

The first classes were held in the St Patrick’s parish church, built in 1892. As the school expanded, the Sisters of Mercy opened a new school building on Patrick Street in 1952. In these early days, St Patrick’s also enrolled secondary school students.

In 1986, St Patrick’s school and church relocated to the present site in Allawah Street, Blacktown.

St Patrick’s remained under the Mercy leadership until 2001 when the first lay Principal was appointed. We continue to honour the legacy of the Mercy sisters.

In 2019, St Patrick’s Blacktown celebrated 100 years of quality Catholic education. Our school continues to grow with the latest technology and well-equipped learning, outdoor and multi-purpose areas.
